About us
The Institute of Patent Attorneys India (IPAI) was established in 2005 by Dr R K Nair, a renowned Patent Attorney. The institute aims to provide professional training and assist candidates in obtaining the necessary qualifications to practice as a Patent Agent under the Patent Act and Rules.
With the ratification of the agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO), practising as a patent attorney has gained significant importance in India and other signatory countries.
The IPAI is a centre of excellence in teaching, training, and research in Patent Laws and Practice. Through its training programs, hundreds of students have successfully cleared the Indian Patent Agent Exam and have been well-placed in their careers.
To become a registered Patent Agent in India, candidates must have a Science, Engineering, Pharmacy, or Technology degree. The demand for such career options is high, and there is a need for proper training to bridge the gap in expertise. Many corporate houses seek qualified candidates to establish and manage their IP departments.
In light of these factors, the IPAI offers a highly recommended six-month training program for the Patent Agent Examination conducted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Government of India) through Patent Offices in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. The training program is designed to equip candidates with strong technical backgrounds with the necessary knowledge and skills in Patent Laws and Practice to become competent IP professionals.
The training is conducted by experienced professionals, including advocates, patent attorneys, and other experts in the field. The IPAI is committed to providing comprehensive support and guidance to ensure success in the examination conducted by the Patent Offices in India.
Patent Agents, also known as Patent Attorneys, are specialized legal advisors who assist clients in protecting their intellectual property rights. They work in Patent Attorneys' private firms or large industrial organisations' Patent Departments. Their work involves drafting patent specifications, filing patent applications, handling correspondence with patent offices, representing clients in hearings, and dealing with opposition proceedings. Only individuals who meet the prescribed qualifications and are registered under the Patent Act can practice as Patent Attorneys in India.
The IPAI has a well-equipped library with standard Patent Law Books available in India, including some foreign publications. DVDs and intellectual property books from organizations like the Japan Patent Office and WIPO are also accessible. The institute provides study materials through correspondence mode with contact classes conducted in various cities.
